Fear is not real. The only place that fear can exist is in our thoughts of the future. It is a product of our imagination, causing us to fear things that do not at present and may not ever exist. That is near insanity Kitai. Do not misunderstand me, danger is very real, but fear is a choice. We are all telling ourselves a story and that day mine changed.- Cypher Raige

Grow Up – Boyace Van Harlan Jr.,PhD

Image“This past, the Negro’s past, of rope, fire, torture… Death and humiliation; fear by day and night, fear as deep as the marrow of the bone… This past, this endless struggle to achieve and confirm a human identity… Yet contains, for all it’s horror, something very beautiful… People who cannot suffer can never grow up, can never discover who they are… “- James Baldwin

People who cannot suffer can never grow up! Most of us spend most of our lives trying in one way or another trying to avoid the pain of suffering. Through much of the nineteenth century Americans developed a pioneer spirit. It was forged as steel through a furnace of a hostile physical environment, lawlessness, and the unknown. Within this great American history lies another stark reality of yet another miraculous development. Despite Jim Crow, slavery, rape, and genocide a people survived.

imageThe very first thing I remember in my early childhood is a flame, a blue fame jumping off a gas stove somebody lit… I was three years old … I felt fear, real fear, for the first time in my life. But I remember it also like some kind of adventure, some kind of wired joy, too. I guess that experience took me someplace in my head I hadn’t been before. To some frontier, the edge, maybe, of everything possible… The fear I had was almost like an invitation, a challenge to go forward into something I knew nothing about. That’s where I think my personal philosophy of life… Started, with that moment… In my mind I have always believed and thought since then that my motion had to be forward, away from the heat of that flame”. – Miles Davis

Fear- Boyace Van Harlan Jr.,PhD

ImageWhat is the Function of Fear? -Boyace Van Harlan Jr., PhD

Fear’s main function in our lives is to stimulate powerful physical responses, either fight or flight, allowing us to retreat from danger in time. If one cannot let go of her fear once the threat has passed you will find it difficult to function and thrive. If you are not careful you may reframe what may actually be a low threat low risk environment into one of danger and vulnerability. Fear or rather “false fear” mostly is a call for retreat. This puts us in the position of falling back when maybe we should be moving forward! Our fear if we don’t get a handle on it can make it almost impossible to defeat or rise above our adversity. Is it possible that we are manufacturing our adverse situations by disproportionating our thoughts to the negative. Remember worry is thought about something that has not happened yet. What if we visualized a more positive outcome? Fear, nameless, unreasoning, unjustified anxiety, terror, can leave us motionless, inept, practically dead in the water! We may lose sight! Is this really an opportunity? A challenge?
As you give into fear you create your own self-fulfilling prophesy. Your energy dissipates; you become paralyzed!

It is just as easy to view a crisis or problem as a challenge or opportunity. We need to take respite from the grueling struggle! Reframe… And move forward! Franklin Delano Roosevelt was right; we have nothing to fear but fear itself!

Vinegar Mixed With Gall- Boyace Van Harlan Jr., PhD

Where you ever reproved for a wrong that you didn’t intend nor commit? Perception is ultimate reality whether fact or fiction. Oftentimes howeverImage, we are tempted to defend ourselves by proving our point or we what is even worse; we soften the blow with ┬ásome form of anesthesia. Work, drugs, sex, exercise. As I contemplated this thought before my evening hour walk I thought of my Savior┬áJesus. In (Matthew 27:34) – “they gave Him wine to drink mingled with gall; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink.” Christ was willing to take the blow of the Cross for our sakes without any anodyne. We must refuse the anodyne also and bear our cross daily! It was there at the Cross where Christology gave birth to Pneumatology and the Holy Spirit was released. Beloved it is the Father’s desire that our spirits be released and the “sons of God manifested!

Be Patient With Yourself- Boyace Van Harlan Jr., PhD

There is a wonderful truth that I discovered on today! The truth that His grace, that grace that I received at the “new birth” is still with me! Patiently waiting and working toward toward the time when I would learn the next lesson I had beenImage so reluctant to learn since that day years ago, when I became saved. If He is that patient with me, why can’t I be patient with myself! It is the “wilderness experience”; that we may know ourselves. (Deuteronomy 8:2) It is when we come to the end of ourselves that God can begin His good work.

There is Life in the Way of the Righteous- Boyace Van Harlan Jr., PhD

We have been declared the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. It is not of our own goodness or actions. We are trees of righteousness! The planting of The Lord!

Proverbs 12:28
King James Version (KJV)
28 In the way of righteousness is life: and in the pathway thereof there is no death.
The way of religion is a straight, plain way; it is the way of righteousness. There is not only life at the end, but life in the way; all true comfort.
We are the righteousness of God in Christ! 2 Corinthians 5:21
2 Corinthians 5:21
King James Version (KJV)
21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.Image
